By definition, emergencies happen when they are least expected. They can be scary, unnerving, and cause tremendous anxiety. Despite all of this, you can still be prepared for an emergency. In the case of a dental emergency, the key to being prepared is having a dentist who is ready to do whatever is necessary to help you. For a dental emergency, Bridgeport, CT, turns to Dr. Michael Curtis, who completed two years of hospital residency training, where he handled complex dental emergencies on a regular basis.

Dr. Curtis and his staff of dental hygienists and dental assistants believe in addressing dental emergencies as quickly as possible—the same day if they can and absolutely if your situation warrants being seen immediately. Not certain whether or not you have a dental emergency? Call our office at 203-416-6502 and we’ll help you determine if you need urgent attention.

With some emergencies, the difference between saving a tooth and losing a tooth can be as little as 30 minutes. That’s right. If Dr. Curtis sees you within half-an-hour of when your emergency happens, there’s a better chance he’ll be able to save your tooth.

A knocked out tooth is one of the more serious dental emergencies that requires Dr. Curtis’ attention within 30 minutes. Until we can see you, we recommend you follow the steps below to preserve the tooth:

  • Always handle the tooth by the crown and try not to touch the root
  • Rinse the tooth carefully; you may want to put a towel in the sink to keep from accidentally dropping the tooth down the drain
  • If possible, place the tooth back in its socket and hold it there by gently biting down
  • If you can’t put the tooth back in place, put it in a cup of milk and drive to Dr. Curtis’ office

Other dental emergencies include a suddenly loose or misaligned tooth, a fractured tooth, or any type of injury that causes bleeding of the lips, mouth or gums. Of course, our first hope is that you never have a dental emergency that necessitates calling Dr. Curtis. With this in mind, we encourage all of our patients to wear mouthguards when they play any sport, contact or non-contact. So many dental emergencies could be avoided if people wore mouthguards to protect their teeth from being chipped, cracked or knocked out.
